Sail and Humans
Windcoop operates wind-powered container ships, that rely primarily on wind : a clean, abundant, and free source of energy.
These innovative vessels help reduce pollution in the shipping industry. Construction of our first wind-powered cargo vessel will begin in 2025. Our goal is for it to be collectively owned by a broad community of shipowners who are passionate about driving the transition to low-carbon maritim transport.
Windcoop is organized as a SCIC (a French multi-stakeholder cooperative), welcoming individuals, businesses, and public organisations to become members and co-owners. This citizen-driven model empowers everyone in shaping a new kind of shipping industry, one that is low-carbon, people-focused, and environmentally responsible.

A low-carbon and tailor-made offer

Designed to harness the power of the wind to its fullest, the 90-metre-long Windcoop container ship can carry 210 containers while reducing its CO₂ emissions by 60% compared with conventional vessels.
The vessel will sail at an average speed of 9 knots (instead of 15 knots for a traditional container ship), primarly powered by 3 rigid wingsails for a total area of 1,050 m2. Paradoxically, the route is faster than existing links, which are often indirect and burdened by transshipments and port of calls.
The container ship will set sail on our first France-Madagascar route in May 2027.
An expanding fleet

New routes are already in the planning stage
This Windcoop cargo ship is the first in a planned series. We want to develop a fleet of low-carbon ships that are ready to meet the challenges of international transport.
Our goal: To design shipping routes that meet the needs of our customers.
Importers, producers, shippers… Our future routes depend on you!
